YOUmedia at CPL’s Harold Washington Library

Last month, Chicago Public Library’s main branch (the Harold Washington Library) opened up a teen digital media space called YOUmedia.  At YOUmedia teens can learn digital technology skills through free workshops, and participate in literature-based projects.  YOUmedia houses thousands of books and more than 100 laptop and desk computers, as well as a recording studio.

YOUmedia was designed to be a space for teens to:

  • hang out
  • mess around
  • geek out

These three enjoyable activities should, over time, increase teens technogological and information literacy.  The center is mostly used during after-school hours, although teachers can sign up to use the center during school hours. You can learn more at
